Open vented thermal store providing  open vented heating and mains pressure hot water

The Gledhill Torrent ECO OV utilises an open vented boiler and/or electric immersion heaters as it's primary energy source.

Additional tappings for a wood burner and/or solid fuel stove can be added if required at a small extra cost.

One of the benefits of the open vented boiler configuration is the whole of the boiler output is available to the thermal store, unlike the indirect Sealed Primary of the SP model where the output of the boiler is limited by the heat exchanger.

This will improve the operational efficiency of the boiler, reducing the primary energy usage and running costs.

Hot water and heating

The Torrent ECO OV provides high performance mains pressure hot water. The heat energy provided by the primary heat source and/or solid fuel input may also be circulated from the store to the central heating circuit allowing rapid heat up of a radiator system.

Electric only option

Where no boiler or solid fuel source is available, the Torrent ECO OV may be heated by the two 3kW electric immersion elements. Domestic hot water can be generated from one or both elements.

It is possible for the central heating to be supplied from the store, but this is only powered from the lowest immersion heater. It is important to note that the design heat loss of the rooms to be heated must be less that the power output of the lowest immersion element. If the design loss is greater than this the heating will need to be supplemented by another heat source. However, it is when a combination of renewable resources are available that the true benefits of the Torrent ECO OV can be achieved.

If connected to the standard power grid, the thermal store is the perfect way to maximise usage of an off-peak tariff. In such an instance, arrangements should be made with you electrical supplier to power the lower immersion heating element accordingly hence minimising running costs.

Notes on F&E Tanks

All thermal stores require a Feed and Expansion tank (F&E) to facilitate thermal expansion, evaporation and system top-up. Existing tanks and other proprietary products may be suitable and therefore used. However, your strict attention is drawn to the suitability of any tank you plan to use in view of the temperature of water that could potentially reach it.

You should ensure the tank you intend to use can handle water at the temperatures associated with thermal stores, with special attention being paid to this issue if an uncontrollable heat source is connected (i.e. wood burning stove, AGA, Rayburn etc).

Horrific injury or death from scalding can result if an overflow scenario exists with a tank that distorts or sags when subjected to high temperature water.

Gledhill can supply two types of F&E tank as an optional extra for use with the Torrent ECO thermal store. The plastic type (Type 1) is suitable for use with 'controllable heat sources'. If 'uncontrollable heat sources' are to be connected then a metal 'high temperature' F&E tank must be used. Both are optional extras and must be ordered with the thermal store to avoid additional carriage charges.

Type 1 is suitable for use on a standard system where the heat source is regulated (e.g. gas or oil boiler controlled by thermostat).

Metal is suited for use with less controllable heat sources such as wood burning stoves or an AGA where heat from the source is unregulated.

*F&E tanks must be sized to take the water expansion of the whole system into account. (i.e. if additional system pipework connects directly to the cylinder the volume of the whole must be taken into account)
